Shelf Life Of Maple Syrup | Need To Know Storage Tips [2022]

You might be wondering about the shelf life of maple syrup. Keep in mind that we are talking about 100% pure maple syrup that has absolutely no added ingredients.

Single forest, unblended maple syrup is a pure and natural food that can be used in many recipes and also on its own. The shelf life of maple syrup, like most other food items, depends on harvesting and storage conditions.

The good news is that maple syrup has a high sugar content and when it's stored in cool temperatures, like your refrigerator, it will keep for a very long time as long as it is stored tightly sealed.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF UNOPENED MAPLE SYRUP?

Well, that depends on the manufacturing process of the maple syrup. If maple syrup has been harvested and bottled with best practices in a glass container, then it should have an indefinite shelf life. Not all maple syrups are harvested with best practices in mind. So if you see mold on your maple syrup or question the quality, it's best to discard it.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF OPENED MAPLE SYRUP?

Maple syrup can last a year or more in the fridge. Sometimes, it can last even two years. Maple syrup can and will eventually grow mold. Once the bottle of maple syrup is opened, it must be stored in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed bottle, preferably glass for optimal freshness.

HOW CAN I EXTEND THE SHELF LIFE OF PURE MAPLE SYRUP?

Maple syrup will keep indefinitely in the freezer. Maple syrup will not go into a solid state in the freezer. It will keep soft but not pourable. To use maple syrup that has been frozen, take it out of the freezer about 20 minutes before you need it and it will return to a liquid state. If your maple syrup has been properly sealed prior to freezing it can be re-frozen without any ill effects.

Here at Maple Roch, we offer 1.5L pouches that can be easily stored in the freezer so that you can take it out whenever you need it.

Our pure, organic maple syrup never changes color, texture or flavour. When storing the pouches in the freezer be sure to stand them upright so nothing is sitting on the pouch. When you are ready to use the syrup, just leave the pouch out for 20 minutes, refill a glass container and return the pouch to the freezer.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY MAPLE SYRUP HAS GONE BAD?

First examine your maple syrup for signs of mold. Another sign that the maple syrup has gone bad is it might not smell right. If the maple syrup has any kind of sour odor, or smells like fermentation then discard it.

Maple syrup should smell sweet, like caramel.

WHAT ARE THE CRYSTALS ON THE BOTTOM OF MY MAPLE SYRUP BOTTLE?

You might see crystals on the bottom of your maple syrup bottle and that is perfectly fine. Crystallization can be seen in maple syrup from time to time. It is a natural occurrence that happens when the sugar (glucose) separates from the water content. Maple crystals are completely edible, very sweet and contain vitamins and minerals.

In conclusion, maple syrup should last a very long time if it is kept in an airtight container and not exposed to extremely hot or cold temperatures during storage.
